The harsh reality of winter has hit me in the face like a bag of rocks. Good thing it’s so cold my face is too numb to feel the pain. For those readers who may not understand what this season really means here is a true or false test. Winter is a season spanning from Dec 21- March 21. (In the northern hemisphere)

TRUE-Cabs make a killing this season
Snow is pretty.
TRUE/FALSE-Like sugar falling from the sky tis so magical until dogs pee, people spit, trash is throw out, dirt is mixed in.etc
Snow is the worst thing ever; actually no ice is even worse.
Winter is the most wonderful time of the year.
FALSE-Winter will make you hate everyone and everything
If you got any of these wrong you’ve never experienced the depths of despair this season can truly bring. While it would be easy to blame my lack of energy on lack of Vitamin D and drown my sorrows in take out and Netflix binging I have found a new way to fight away the winter blues.
TREAT YO (My) SELF
A phrase I learned from overindulging in Parks and Rec..I guess Netflix is actually an educative tool.
The basic concept of is to take time to do something out of the ordinary that makes you really happy, no matter the cost. In the past two weeks to get myself out of the house I have treated myself to expensive indulgent dinners. I even ordered dessert! When you live in a city it is easy to get comfortable with your eateries. I often choose what’s easiest and cost efficient overlooking deliciousity. (Yes, new word) While it is important to cook for yourself you cannot broaden your culinary repertoire if you never expand your palette past your own kitchen.I had two lovely dining experiences and would highly recommend both of the restaurants. I left both places feeling extremely satisfied and happy. If you are in New York definitely check them out!
FEELS LIKE: You are eating in an industrial garage, but a really hip garage with all of New York’s coolest people.
YOU HAVE TO ORDER: Duck Confit– no words to describe the intricate flavors developed on this perfectly balanced plate Kale and Wild Mushroom Paella for anyone that says vegetables can’t be interesting. Chocolate Crema Catalina-chocolate crème brulee I would go back to just eat this again.
OVERALL: Although I was not too impressed with the cocktails everything else about this place was awesome. Go with a group to try all the tapas, but be warned they are SMALL portions. Entrees are decent sized not the best value for your money but the flavors you will experience are priceless. Beware getting a reservation can be a bit tricky, plan in advance or try your luck at the bar.
FACTS: New American restaurant inside Ink Hotel that focuses on farm fresh produce and sustainability.
FEELS LIKE: A very warm, rustic, and cozy living room with dinning tables. People in there look like they are on Just for lunch dates.
YOU HAVE TO ORDER: Grilled Quail- Stuffed with Prosciutto, Spinach, Salsify, Kumquats, with Mustard Vinaigrette. It’s small but so good! Chimayo– the featured tequila cocktail packs quite a punch with spiced quince but is rounded out with sweet pear cider.
SERVICE: The waiter was kinda hot and my water glass was never empty. Basically perfection.
OVERALL: Not the most unique flavors but the quality of ingredients and perfection of simple technique is what makes this place stand out. Excellent place if you want familiar flavors. On the weekdays before 7pm they have a pre fix with three courses for 45 dollars!
So don’t let winter get you down! If you live in warmer climates and don’t have winter blues (I hate you right now) I still encourage you to TREAT YO SELF, whatever that means to you!
