Chef Kat is #OTR

lone vacays call for lots of selfles.

Now that Beyonce and Jay-z have ended their On the Run Tour, it’s time for the Chef Kat version. Although I am not really running from anything I will be documenting some awesome restaurants I visit around the country. The first stop on my Tour of America is Miami, city of scenic beaches, epic partying, and tropical weather. I honestly don’t know how anyone actually lives here and is productive; it just feels like vacation.Palm-trees at South Beach

If you have been to Miami you have probably been to South beach and been swindled by the foreign beauties on Ocean Blvd beckoning you to come in for Happy Hour two for one drinks. Then when you sit down it’s lackluster food and you find the drinks are two for one because they are full of sugar and cost you a million dollars and your first-born child. Truly people only eat at these places for convenience and to people watch. You have now been warned.

      Top Three Tips for Miami

1. Stay away from boardwalk cafes! Warned twice, you if you are swindled totally your fault!

2. Apply Sunscreen every hour or you will get burnt. Trust me. Also be prepared for rain, as it happens often.

3. Explore other areas besides South Beach!  Water sports are awesome when the water is as clear as a crystal and warm as a bathtub but Brickell, Wynwood and the bays offer different interesting experiences.

Wynwood Kitchen and Bar

Location: Wynwood, up and coming area, about six miles from the heart of South beach.

Overall Feel: Imagine eating delicious food in a modern art museum. You just feel cool sitting down. There are all kinds of interesting things to look at. Eclectic crowd ranging from young hipsters to old people that just look rich.

Service: Quick and casual but waiter was extremely knowledge and professional.

Food: All the food is served tapas style, which makes it great for an interactive date or sharing with friends.

Must Try: 48 HOUR CRISPY PORK. It’s like braised but then flash fried, crunchy and moist. Omg so good. It also comes with jalepeno cheese grits, which may be one of the top 5 things I have put in my mouth in my life. I wanted to lick the bowl clean. Also the bok choy is served in a surprisingly different way, crispy with a side of soy.

What makes it special: After dinner you can take an art walk, which features some of the leading graffiti street artists, such as Brazilian twins, Shepard Fairey and Kenny Scharf. Super Cool!

The Butcher Shop

Location: Wynwood, up and coming area, about six miles from the heart of South beach.

Overall Feel:Feels like you are eating in your hip neighbors backyard. Inside is industrial with an actual butcher counter where they feature all the meats they serve.

Meat Counter

Service: Casual.

Food: MEAT MEAT MEAT. If you are vegetarian this is not the place for you. It is also a beer garden, with plenty of craft beers to choose from.

Duck Wings.

Must Try: Kitchen Sink Burger, their signature burger is a mixture of brisket yes, brisket and sirloin. Topped with thick cut but crispy apple smoked bacon, sautéed onions and mushrooms, and served with blue cheese fritters. Comes with fries or a salad, but if this is not the place to think skinny thoughts. Go for the fries and you’ll leave very full and satisfied.

What makes it special: Even their desserts have meat it them. Save room for the Butcher Shop Bacon Sundae, waffle with vanilla ice cream, pecans, and bacon. Also right next door to a really fun lounge, The Social Lubricant

Doraku

Location: Lincoln Road

Overall Feel: Contemporary and sleek Asian feel

Service: Casual and Quick.

Food: Sushi bar…but go for happy hour best deal ever. Close enough to walk over from the beach when the late afternoon rain starts. Small plates range from 3-8 dollars. Drinks from 3-6 dollars. Everything is brought out when it’s ready so you won’t be sitting hungry long.

What makes it special: Outdoor seating in the Lincoln Mall makes it a great place to people watch but still eat great food. Get there early for Happy Hour because it gets packed!

Next time you are in Miami hope you are able to try out one of these places with food that will actually excite your tastebuds. It’s time for me to get back out on the beach!

PS. I have been informed by the true Beyonce fan #OTR tour has not ended, simply the US leg. She will now be in Europe. I needed to correct that because you know how Yonce fans are:

my life has been a very interesting journey thus far. in my quarter century crisis im and not certain of much except that i love cooking and entertaining, and pleasing people is my passion. (wait that sounded a little funny) i am goofy eccentric, and love to laugh, in fact i often laugh at the most inappropriate times. i place high value in honesty and working hard. i don’t really believe in faking it until you make it, without some base knowledge or some sort of depth to your cause. i believe in making mistakes and trying everything once as long as you bring yourself no harm and no harm to others. i am a new age hippy, my words to live by are freedom, serenity, and love. i look for signs of the world and listen. i do judge, anyone who says they do not is a liar, but i use my judgements against you to reflect back on me to see how i can better myself. i hate constraints of our society, including grammar, punctuation, and recipes. i think fast except when it comes to numbers. the culinary world has always been and shall be my safe haven and outlet. i want to inspire, teach, and learn.
